Smart Ways to Use Credit Cards
We all know how convenient it is to have a credit card or two always inside our wallet. However, we should also be mindful of how to use them properly. Otherwise we might find ourselves in a pit of debt pretty soon. I have put up steps on how to avoid the common mistakes people commit when using their credit cards.
Be wary of the interest rates.
If you look out for a new credit card, be mindful of the APR (annual percentage rates) the company is imposing. This is very important since the amount that you will not be able to pay at the end of the month will carry this percentage rate. There are some banks which offer enticing features such as no annual fees, longer grace periods, etc. Be extra careful and weigh these features alongside the APR.
Avoid Cash Advances
If you are in a situation where in you are in need of cash, try to go look for it somewhere else. As we all know, the interest rate attached to cash advances using credit card is much higher than purchasing on credit card. Plus, they charge service fee of the interest rate. Saving up is definitely the way to go when you want to have a substantial amount of cash at hand.
Pay Religiously:
As much as possible, try to pay off your balance at the end of the month in full. By doing this, you do not incur interests which after a few months or so might be too burdensome for you to pay. After a while, you will find a hard time just paying the interests, what more on the balance itself.
Prioritize:
If however, you can only pay as much every month, try to settle the debt on the credit card which accrues a much higher interest, one that has the highest interest rate, and has a larger balance. By settling the bigger debt, you can avoid the interest rate to balloon on the succeeding months.
Purchase wisely
Most of the credit card companies out there have these promos regarding rewards, miles, etc. These entice costumer to use their credit cards more often than they should really have. Avoid using your card just for the sake of earning more points. Rationalize your spending. When you feel the urge to buy something, ask yourself first before swiping that card, “Is it really a want, or a need?”
By following these simple guidelines, you can avoid getting into the pitfall of debt. Or in case you are in one, by doing so, will enable you to get of that hole you are in as quickly as possible.
